WHY ?

THERE ARE TWO MAIN REASONS WHY -

1. A LACK OF BASIC KNOWLEDGE & EDUCATION
A lack of education and understanding of the functions of the body regarding menstruation and reproduction: plus traditional religious beliefs and superstitions: women’s embedded low-status in society:  fundamental cultural misogyny:all are factors that perpetuate chaupadi and other social norms that govern and inform the social attitudes and practices towards women and menstruation in particular.

2. POVERTY DRIVES THE SITUATION
Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world.  A quarter  of the population live on less than £1 a day – what we spend on a packet of sanitary wear!

Women in rural Nepal or low income town families have little or no access to sanitary wear, and even if they did, they just could not afford it.When you are scraping a hand-to-mouth living from subsistence farming or breaking stones for a handful of rupees, or factory working, there is no money available for non-essentials and sanitary wear is deemed ‘non-essential’.

PERIOD POVERTY has become a new issue in the Western world - it has always been a living reality for women in Nepal.
PERIOD POVERTY leads to medical complications, mental health problems, social difficulties and perpetuates the subjugation of women.

Freedom Kit Bags end period poverty!
